Limiting beliefs hold us back from our true potential. Identify, challenge and reframe you thinking and unlock the chains that are holding you back.

Limiting beliefs are the invisible chains that hold us back from reaching our true potential. These deeply ingrained thoughts often go unchallenged, subtly influencing our decisions and actions. However, overcoming these beliefs is essential for personal growth and transformation, especially in midlife.

What are limiting beliefs? In this article, we’ll explore how you can identify, challenge, and reframe your limiting beliefs to unlock your potential and live a more fulfilling life.

What Are Common Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs are often rooted in our past experiences, unrealistic expectations, and self-doubt. Here are some common limiting beliefs that many women in midlife face:

  1. “I’m too old to learn something new.”
  2. “I don’t have enough time.”
  3. “I’m not good enough.”
  4. “It’s too late to start over.”
  5. “I don’t deserve to invest in myself.”

These beliefs can prevent us from pursuing new opportunities, achieving our goals, living our best lives, and serving others.

How to Challenge and Reframe Your Limiting Beliefs

Overcoming limiting beliefs involves challenging their validity and reframing them into empowering thoughts. Think about this:

1. Identify Your Limiting Beliefs: Start by recognizing the beliefs that hold you back. Journaling can help you uncover these thoughts.

2. Question Their Validity: Ask yourself whether these beliefs are based on facts or assumptions and conclusions. Are they true or just stories you’ve been telling yourself?

3. Reframe Your Beliefs: Turn limiting beliefs into empowering statements.

4. Take Action: Challenge your new beliefs by taking small, consistent actions towards your goals. Prove to yourself that your new beliefs are true.

Case Study: What is a limiting belief that is holding her back?

My client Kim had been a stay-at-home mom and her youngest child was leaving for college. They would soon be empty nesters. As Kim’s 3 kids had become more independent in their teen years, she offered volunteer hours to her church and Home Owner’s Association planning and organizing community projects.

Now that she would have no one at home to be responsible for, she thought about going back to work as an office receptionist- the job she had years before. She was journaling about her plan and the fear started setting in.

Her limiting beliefs:

No one wants a 50+-year-old woman in a front-facing position…

I don’t have the tech skills required for modern office software…

I can’t compete in the job market after being out of it for so long and it’s not worth my time to start at the bottom and “work my way up”.

Our plan

The 1st thing we did was bust her myths about how qualified she was. We discovered that her view of herself shaped her perception of being a stay-at-home mom as “less than” her working friends and family. Small jokes from her kids about being less tech-savvy than Gen Z added to her unrealistic conclusions.

By exploring all of the things she had become proficient at over the years, we put those false perceptions into perspective. We discovered in our short conversation that she excelled in project management and organization. She was the go-to person in her volunteer positions.

I advised her to post in her neighborhood group and give invitations at her HOA meeting and church, that she was hosting a free and fun organizing workshop.

The response was overwhelming, and Kim hired me as her coach to help her pursue her dream of going back to work as a professional organizer.
